The water cooler is an appliance that can often be neglected and over looked in the office, so we have put together a list of reminders of why you should be thankful for your water dispenser!!

It makes drinking water ever so slightly more interesting. Water is probably one of the dullest drinks there is but when it is packaged in a good looking cooler with lights and buttons, it can make getting hydrated considerably more enjoyable!

It’s probably one of the best environmental choices you’ll make all day. Plumbed in (or mains-fed as they’re sometimes called) water coolers are a much ‘greener’ way to drink water than from plastic bottles. Plumbed in coolers eradicate the need for the production of plastics, hugely reduce the food miles involved with delivering bottles of water and significantly decreases the amount of waste sent to landfill.

It’s an ideal height to lean on when chatting with colleagues. It’s like the saying ‘all good parties happen in the kitchen’ – ‘all good office gossip happens at the water cooler’.

It saves you from putting the kettle on. There are water coolers on the market now that are also capable of dispensing boiling water, saving you the hassle of waiting for the kettle to boil.

It helps you to get hydrated. As we all know there are many health benefits to drinking water. If you aren’t aware of how good the clear stuff can make you feel, see our blog here. When there’s a water cooler nearby it definitely makes it easier to keep on top of your RDA of water intake.

So from now on please don’t take your water cooler for granted!

If you can think of any other reasons that you are thankful for your water cooler, please let us know in the comments box below.

I don’t know about you but I had become resigned to the fact that summer was over and winter was definitely on its way. Winter boots were out and ready to go and the heating was on. Until this week when summer returned for a one week only, exclusive event! Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. Especially as we are an ‘ice-cream’ business and the good weather has led to a noticeable increase in enquiries over the last few days. With temperatures soaring to 26 degrees in some places, it’s really important to keep hydrated. So, don’t forget to download our Drink Alarm to keep on top of your RDA of water: http://www.watercoolersdirect.com/drink-alarm/
Despite wanting to sit out in the sun drinking a nice cold glass of water, we have to remain focussed because it is ultra hectic here at WaterCoolersDirect HQ. We have got loads going on – preparations for the Amsterdam exhibition Aquatech are in full swing and we have the biggest stand that we have ever had before at the show. Our Trade division (TradeCoolersDirect.com) is also exhibiting at Vendex in November, we are having exciting talks about upcoming product development that are ongoing and we are continuing our work with large blue chip organisations and small companies alike.
In more news we were so pleased to be placed fourth in Gloucestershire’s 25 Fastest Growing Companies. We were among excellent company in the list and it is great to have a real presence in our home county.

Do you get bored of drinking your RDA of water? It can be truly uninspiring to stick to water as your drink of choice day in, day out, even though you know you should. SO, I have gone on a one (wo)man mission to find out some ways of livening up your water drinking regime.

Use some funky coasters to brighten up your water ‘landing space’. There are loads of cool coasters on the market and these mini palette ones are my favourite. Well worth a purchase I think.

You could use our Drink Alarm app. It allows you to view your hydration progress on a graph to encourage you to keep up your intake of water. It makes drinking water a bit more interesting at least.

Why not try a nice and healthy cordial in your water to liven it up a little? The Bottlegreen company do a whole range of fab tasting and unusual cordials that all contain pure and natural ingredients. The Strawberry and Elderflower cordial is a particular favourite…

I’ve found this really cool (no pun intended) site that does novelty ice cube trays. You could liven up your water with some shaped ice cubes. The Lego bricks are a particular favourite of mine!

Try peeling and freezing bits of different fruit such as lemons, limes and oranges to put them into your glass of water to add a bit of flavour and variety.

These are just a few; do you have any more to add? Please let us know!

Get Hydrated, Stay Hydrated with our FREE Drink Alarm App!

At last the day has come, after hours and hours of behind the scenes development we are now launching our brand new, free Drink Alarm app!!!

We developed this app as a tool to help people get hydrated. Drinking the recommended amount of water (which obviously varies from person to person) is essential for us to stay in tip-top condition and has numerous health benefits.

For anyone who is keen to live a healthy lifestyle and wanting to experience the benefits of being and staying hydrated, this app is a must have.

One of our primary aims when developing the app was to make sure it was free as we want this valuable information available to anyone. We also wanted to ensure that it was fun and easy to use and doesn’t require the user entering excessive amounts of information. Hopefully you’ll agree that we have achieved this!

It is also flexible and allows the user to specify the length of time they would like to monitor their hydration for and specify the type of container they will be drinking from (which can quickly be changed accordingly without affecting the user’s history).

Ultimately, this app is a refreshing, easy way for people to monitor and improve their hydration levels.

So, why don’t you download it and give it a go? We’d love to hear what you think…

I don’t know about your office but here at Water Coolers Direct we seem to have a constant supply of cakes and doughnuts. All the girls (and some of the men) are constantly talking about cutting down and loosing weight whilst reaching for the next naughty treat (will power isn’t our strongest point). That is when this caught my eye “The Dukan Diet: Want to Stay Slim Forever? Eat whatever you want – except on Thursdays!”. Apparently it is a diet that has been spear headed by a French guy called Dr.Dukan and in its most basic form is a high protein and low carb diet comprising of four different eating programs that all follow on from another. The book ‘The Dukan Diet’ has been translated into 10 languages and being sold in 20 different countries so it must be doing something right, mustn’t it?

When researching about this new, ground-breaking diet I discovered that it has been followed by numerous A list celebrities including Jennifer Lopez and it may go some way to explain how French women always manage to look so slim. So, how does it work? Well, it’s fairly longwinded actually (hence it has been made into a whole book) but on its most basic level it promotes eating protein – and lots of it. In fact the first stage of the diet – The Attack Phase – requires you to purely eat protein for a set number of days (to lose 1 stone it is suggested to stay in the first phase for around 2-3 days). Personally I think I would struggle to eat just protein for 1 meal let alone for 2-3 days…

The diet caught my eye as during this phase it has been emphasised that anyone following it must drink plenty of water, 3 litres is the amount that is recommended – at last part of a diet that should be fairly easy to stick to! When eating high quantities of protein, more uric acid is consumed and so this needs to be flushed out of the body. It’s surprising how important drinking water is both in staying healthy when on diets but also in helping you to lose weight.

Where the Dukan Diet differs from most other diets is that once the weight has been lost (in the first phases of the program), Dr Duken then slowly helps to reintroduce a more ‘normal’ diet that is healthy and keeps the weight off. There is just one catch – Duken suggests that you always have one day a week where you only eat protein for the rest of your life (he suggests a Thursday).

Ok, so I realise that this is a controversial title for a blog on a water cooler company’s website but it struck me that with all of the different coolers and related products reaching the market and with the vast customer choice that is now available, could it be curtains for the traditional water cooler?

Firstly what is a traditional water cooler? You know the sort – the ones born out of the 1980s that rely on huge plastic bottles of water being delivered by a sweaty delivery driver, who carries them into your (huge) allocated bottled water ‘storage area’. I’m sure you’ve experienced the feeling of dread when the water is running out and you have to muster up all of the strength you’ve got to replace the empty bottle with a full one. Take into account the horrendous environmental impact that these bottled coolers have – the use of plastic to make the bottles, the miles that have to be driven to deliver the water and the huge strain on land fill that the discarded bottles cause – and you can see why the death knell could be sounding for the 80’s office essential.

For those of us who have held a ‘productive meeting’ about last night’s telly whilst stood at the water cooler, this is sad news….

In an attempt to provide the user with something different and to move with the times, the clever product development geeks in the industry have had their thinking caps well and truly on. Some pioneering and forward thinking water solutions have since been launched and your choice in water cooler solutions is now endless.

From ‘plumbed in’ coolers that are plumbed directly into the buildings mains and filter and chill the water on demand (thus totally eradicating the need for plastic bottles), to the swanky InSinkErator Hot Tap that can be installed into your home or office and provide you with filtered chilled and filtered boiling water on demand to under sink chillers and branded plumbed in coolers; there really is something for everybody. There are water coolers of all shapes, sizes and colours – you can even have one the shape of your chosen animal if you really want to (a quirky take on the traditional cooler!).

So maybe it could be the ‘end’ for the old, traditional bottled water cooler but fear not as new, and some may say better products, are just around the corner. Admittedly ‘meet you at the under sink kitchen filter’ doesn’t have quite the same ring to it, but you can’t have it all……

Last Wednesday Water Coolers Direct’s MD Fred Cairns Palmer took to the stage among a number of high profile experts, to speak at a Barclays Bank event – Boosting Business Online. As the event was about online marketing all forms of communication were embraced and it is the only seminar I have attended that we were encouraged to be on our mobiles in order to interact with the speakers via text, Twitter or blogging!

The event was extremely popular and was hosted by Daisy McAndrew, Economics Editor of ITV News, with Matt Brittin, Managing Director of Google UK & Ireland, Travers Clarke-Walker from Barclays and leading marketing strategist Josh Spear all speaking.

Josh Spear in particular opened up the audience’s mind to all things digital and his enthusiasm and passion for online marketing was infectious. His blog is worth a read if you’re interested in… well pretty much anything really as he covers art, food, gadgets and loads more…

Daisy McAndrew did a great job of hosting the event and Matt Brittin was very interesting and engaging, offering excellent advice to small businesses on all things website related.

Fred then took part in a Q and A session to share his business experience of the online world with the audience. All in all, it was very worthwhile and would recommend attending if Barclays host one in your area.

Unless you have been out of the country for a few years or have been living under a rock somewhere you will know about the importance of recycling your plastic bottles. Whether you put them into your recycling box or take them to the recycling bank, it can be a real chore to process your plastic.

Whilst surfing the net the other day I came across the ReDesign Light Collection by Sarah Turner who recycles plastic water bottles and crafts them into unique light fittings. They look amazing and really high quality and it got me wondering ‘what else we could do with our plastic bottles….’

Here at WaterCoolersDirect we have put our heads together to give you some ideas of other things that can be done with plastic bottles – if you are willing to spend the time getting crafty you could end up with some real treasures….!!

Cut the bottle in half and use as a recycled ‘plant pot/seed starter’ for your seeds

When cut in half, a plastic bottle makes an ideal funnel for many of your household needs

Once thoroughly dried out, fill with rice (and glitter if you’re feeling adventurous) to make a brilliant ‘shaker’ for your baby/toddler

Cut a coin sized hole and use it as a money box – even better with the large plastic bottles that can hold more.

You could fill your water bottles with sand and use them as weights/dumbbells for use in your fitness regime.

Try refilling them with filtered water and freezing them – you instantly have ice packs that are ideal for a summer picnic. Also once defrosted, they make an ideal, cool drink!

Make holes into the bottle and attach to the hose in your back garden for an excellent – and surprisingly effective – homemade sprinkler.

We’d love to hear from you if you have any more ideas, just leave a comment…
